Middleham Fail To Take Advantage

And Lose Opener By 11 Runs

Report written by Hugh Boorman due to unavailability of your normal cricket correspondent.

Bishop Middleham got their season under way with an encouraging performance in the field. Debutante Geoff Wilson bowled his overs of mystery spin for just six runs while Phil Woods opening at the other end took one wicket off seven runs (I can't believe that). Michael Connely after a nervous start with three wides then took two wickets in two balls. The first to a stunning catch at slip by woods (RON or Phil?), the second to a thin a thin nick to the keeper (the only thing he caught all night). Cooksey and French bowled economically, before Hockey, (another debutante, on loan from FirTree) took two for seven. Star bowlers Ball and Derek Shaw showed they had lost none of last season's edge taking 3 for 11 and 1 for 7 respectively.

A score 0f 81 to win seemed very attainable even accounting for the uneven nature of the wicket.

The innings got off to a disastrous start with captain, wicketkeeper, opening batsman, fixture secretary treasurer, kit man, scorer, statistician and now jobbing reporter getting out first ball. H. Boorman compounded his rusty performance behind the stumps by knocking up a ball that would have been called a wide into the grateful hands of gully. Phil Woods batted much more responsibly making an excellent 30 showing a good balance of defence and aggression. Only Cooksey and R.Woods showed further determination to build an innings. Cooksey being run out by some excellent fielding by our own David Shaw (competitive and sporting as ever). Little else can be said about the batting apart from to congratulate Andrew Shaw for his 1 not out bettering his fathers and uncles single and out for 1.
