Middleham
miss key players as they lose to the Black Horse

Bishop Middleham today played their first ever game against the Black Horse team at Bowburn Cricket Ground. The Middleham side, missing several key bowling figures, lost the game due to some erratic fielding and some strange choice of bowlers at crucial times of the game by captain Boorman (although he also lay's some of the blame with Phil Woods).
Middleham opened the batting with H.Boorman scoring ten and Woods 12. The innings was held together well by David Boorman who retired with 28 not out. Others to get into double figures were David Shaw with 11 and Harry Davison with 12. Davison run out in the final over going for the quick single but getting no response from David Hutton at the other end. Hutton then scored one run off the over (going for his averages/ and missing out on a fine). Compliments have to be made to the Black Horse side who all bowled well and held their catches well.
Middleham with only ten men and with Hutton having to field ( a sight for sore eyes) and not wicket keep due to injury were quickly set upon by the opening Black Horse batsmen. They rode their luck with Boorman unlucky not to take a wicket and the main difference between the two sides being chances being put down. Guilty of such were David Shaw and Michael Boorman who put down reasonably simple takes and Harry Davison who spilled a one low down to his right. However Davison, fielding in the covers, did take one rasping drive comfortably. The major bowling honours went to David Boorman who tied the batsmen down and finished with figures of one for seven off three overs. Other wicket takers included Mike Connelly and Phil Woods (who can believe that). At the crucial stage in the game Boorman had to choose to either put on his better bowlers or bring on the lesser and see how it went. He chose the latter and unfortunately this backfired as the Bowburn team reached the total required before Davison or Alderson could have an impact upon the game.
Although the Black Horse won with four and a half overs to spare I feel if the Middleham side had taken their chances, and had the full team been available, then the game could well have ended very differently.
