Final game of the season ends in defeat for Bishop Middleham

Following a long lay off due to adverse weather conditions and the round of summer holidays, Bishop Middleham cricket team attempted the impossible when they took on the match hardened King James team. The game was played in generally good conditions on a pitch that took some spin but also was a little unpredictable to the ball landing on a length.

The toss was won by captain Hugh Boorman and the opening pair were Mike Smith and Ron Woods. They made a steady start for the first few overs before Ron was run out for 8. The run out was unlucky for Woods as if both batsmen had gone they would have made it but Ron had to turn and make ground back to his own end. Unfortunately Woods slipped on the edge of the cut strip and before he could make his ground was run out at the non-striker's end.

This seemed to unsettle fellow opener Mike Smith. As he too soon followed Woods Back to pavilion for a score of 8. The next partnership was between David Boorman and Harry Davison and they took the score along at a slowish rate under the instructions of captain Boorman. Davison earned himself a fine for batting out two maidens (although under instruction and facing some difficult bowling - the excuse of being under orders being deemed no excuse) and was eventually dismissed for 18.

Boorman played a good support role to Davison and Stephen Ball the next man in. Ball carried his bat for the rest of the innings scoring a hard-grafted 29 (he had to get one innings right in the last two seasons) and perhaps this new found confidence will bring increased rewards in the 1999 season. Following David Boormans departure David Hutton came to the crease but did not bother to trouble the scorers as he was caught for a duck off a lofted drive (obviously thought he was still on the golf course). The final few overs brought a spurt of runs and a total of 103 was reached off the 30 overs.

The King James innings started fairly quickly with the opening batsmen settling in to the bowling. However despite it being a low score there was some good bowling from the Bishop Middleham team and the opposition did not reach their target until the 27th over. Mention has to be made of the bowling of Stephen Ball with 4-0-18-2, Jon Alderson 3-0-8-0and D.Boorman with 2-0-7-0. I would have mentioned Hugh Boormans figures of 2-0-3-0 but he puts himself onto bowl when he feels that the 'right batsmen are at the crease'.

At the end of the day it was a fairly decent performance with a few good points, however the game was lost due to an average batting performance from most of the team. To win the game Bishop Middleham Really needed an extra 25-30 runs on the board.
