Brave Middleham performance cannot prevent dramatic last gasp
victory for Winkers
An under strength Bishop Middleham fought bravely against Sedgefield Winkers, at a rain soaked Trimdon Community College ground, but were beaten with only two balls to go.
Middleham missing two vital team members (Mike Smith and Phil Woods) were put into bat and made early runs with opener Hugh Boorman reaching 26 before retiring and David Boorman reaching 5. Following David Boorman departure Ron Woods once again came to the crease and made an unbeaten 25 (still to lose his wicket). Harry Davison made a quick 7 before being caught of the bowling of Hodgson. Trying to push the run rate along saw the quick departure of David Hutton and Stephen Ball for 1(unluckily caught to the second best catch of the day) and 2 respectively. This brought David Shaw to the crease and again he showed some grit and determination to bat to the end of the innings before being run out on the very last ball for 25 (who cares about fines and averages anyway). The end of the innings saw David Shaw being supported by Derek Shaw (3), J.Alderson (7) and David Boorman (2). Young Andrew Shaw did not bat and the final Middleham Score was 112 thus leaving Sedgefield Winkers to make 113 off their allotted 30 overs.
Following a fine tea the Winkers went into bat and all looked lost for Bishop Middleham as the opening pair quickly reached scores of 25 and 26 before retiring. The early bowling was sound but the batsmen were able to still make runs. However much should be made of the bowling of young Alderson who returned admirable figures of 4 overs for 10 runs. Following the departure of the opening pair the game seemed to start to swing Bishop Middleham's way with wickets falling quickly. The main reason for this was the inspired bowling of Derek Shaw, who took three wickets for 8 runs off his four overs. And also the wicketkeeping of David Hutton who not only managed to actually complete a stumping but also took a tremendous catch off the bowling of Harry Davison (probably the best catch of the day). With the overs starting to run out the tension started to increase out in the middle, with both batsmen and fielders feeling the pressure. This led to high excitement with there being three run outs and also a number of unfortunate mis-fields, especially right at the end of the innings. Stephen Ball almost won the game for Middleham with a fine spell of bowling under pressure put the two opening batsmen were recalled to the crease following the departure of their team mates and they hit the winning runs off the penultimate ball of the innings. The only sour note to the game came towards the very end of the Winkers innings when a run out was disputed by one of the batsmen and this led to a brief exchange of views between him and Middleham captain Hugh Boorman. Using his skills of diplomacy Boorman soon had the situation resolved but some of the Middleham team felt that the Winkers batsman was out of order for the outburst. However overall the game was played in good spirit.
At the time of going to press I have the team scores, however I do not have the figures for the fines imposed by Ron Woods for mistakes made by team members during fielding. I do believe that quite a few fines were incurred during the game and this I partly put down to Ron's renewed vigor with the pen following his recent holiday. Just a reminder any appeal against Ron's decision has to be made to the captain.
Thanks to David Hutton and Hugh Boorman for the email of the scores!
