David Shaw Steers Depleted Middleham Team

To Victory over Fir Tree Lions

After a long lay off due to the renowned English weather (rain, rain and more rain) Bishop Middleham Cricket team produced a solid display to overcome Fir Tree Lions at Bishop Auckland.

The Middleham team depleted by the absence of some key players produced a 5 wicket victory highlighted by a solid 26 not out from new-found batting hero David Shaw. The game was played on an artificial surface without an outfield whose grass was so long that it could have kept a flock of sheep busy for a week.

Captain Hugh Boorman won the toss and put Fir tree in to bat. A sound bowling and fielding display kept the Fir Tree teams score down to 64 of the allotted 18 overs (reduced from 20 due to numbers of players and the adverse weather conditions of poor light and a fine drizzle). For the fielding side wicketkeeper David Hutton made some fine stops behind the wicket and was disappointed when at the end of the innings Harry Davison adjudged that he was to be fined for two misfields. Also Hugh Boorman was also fined for one dropped catch. Any appeals to be made to Ron Woods on his return from holiday. The bowling also included good efforts from all the team that included four of the Boorman clan and two guest players from Sedgefield Winkers.

The Bishop Middleham innings started with S.Maguire and R. Boorman opening (brotherly love played a part there I think) with Boorman run out for 2. This laid the stage for the entry of David Shaw into the fray. Shaw previously known as the binary man for his low scores set himself for a long innings and played with grace and style, picking off singles and achieving a couple of boundaries from loose balls. Partners for Shaw during his innings included Harry Davison out for four, Hugh Boorman out for twelve (including 10 singles) Mike Blockey controversially run out for 3 and then reinstated as not out and a final partnership with Stephen Ball to secure the winning runs.

However the night belonged to David Shaw, let's hope he can carry this performance into the rest of this seasons games.
