Bishop Middleham Find New Impetus for 2004 Season
(Middleham v King James 16th
May 2004)

Middleham, who did not win any of their games in the 2003 season, started this one on a high with a stroll in the park at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club. With Mike Smith newly installed as Director of Cricket (nice title , mike!!), this has left Hugh Boorman with more time to concentrate on the playing side of the game.
It was a glorious sunny day and Boorman won the toss (moral victory there then) and elected to put the opposition into bat.
The opening bowlers were S.Ball and H.Davison, with the first wicket coming from a run out off Davison’s bowling. A fine throw from on loan T.Lawson led to Davison whipping off the stumps. A cautionary note here is that if you are fielding do not wear your wedding ring as the ball may cause the ring to rip into the skin of the finger. Davison left the field for the rest of the over to stem the flow of blood and remove the ring. Ball continued the momentum by taking the next wicket and also performed heroic deeds with a couple of fine stops that left his arm battered and bruised.
The next bowling pairing of J.Davison and M.Smith maintained the fielding sides stranglehold with both keeping the run rate Dawson and Davison taking some valuable wickets. J.Davison also showed great skill and athleticism in making a run out off a ball hit straight back and deflected onto the stumps of the non-strikers wicket. J.Davison also narrowly missed a caught and bowled stooping low to try and collect another one hit straight back at great pace. Smith bowled with accuracy and the only downside to his fielding was the one he let through his legs for 4. (Some rambling comment about rabbits was used as an excuse; I wonder whether his cigarettes were filed with some other substance!!!!)
T.Lawson came on and bowled some fine deliveries that ended with figures of 3 wickets for 16 runs.
The final bowlers were H.Boorman, who as usual winkled one out during his two overs and S.Proctor who bowled his three overs for 20.
Playle who did not bowl worked hard in the field to help keep the run rate down. Boorman missed one chance, which came out of the sun at pace, but manfully he had his ribcage behind it to prevent the boundary. He also showed his usual flair for placement, but as tradition would have it he moved one fielder and the next ball was placed through the vacant space.
As well as some fine bowling
D.Hutton worked tirelessly behind the stumps and made one particularly fine
stop and took one tremendous catch. (I must be mellowing to write comments like this about Hutt)
At the end King James had scored 102 off 31.3 overs.
The batsmen in general played the game with good grace, apart from one
who ‘flung’ his bat when bowled out.
This is just ‘not cricket’ and I hope the appropriate sanctions will be
made.
Following tea Boorman and Lawson opened for Middleham. Boorman survived an early dropped catch and this led
to the openers playing patient cricket with solid defence and taking runs off
the loose delivery. Early difficulties over calls were soon rectified and the
pair went on to make an opening stand of 83 off 25 overs.
Following the dismissal of Boorman, H.Davison came in at number three
and made a toal of 15 not out. Lawson went for 45 and J.Davison hit the winning
runs in the 33rd over.
Overall Middleham never seemed like losing the game and lets hope they maintain
this form for the next game on the 23nd May against the Sedgefield Winkers
